# How work is organized

> Work Explorer organizes work in five levels, from broad business areas down to individual actions.

**Category → Process group → Process → Activity → Step**

| Level             | What it means                                                                                                                                | Example                                           |
| ----------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------- |
| **Category**      | A broad business area used to organize related process groups.                                                                               | Finance                                           |
| **Process group** | A collection of related processes within a category.                                                                                         | Accounts payable                                  |
| **Process**       | A workflow made up of connected activities that achieve a business outcome.                                                                  | Pay a supplier invoice                            |
| **Activity**      | A task within a process, made up of steps that explain how to perform it.                                                                    | Validate the invoice                              |
| **Step**          | A specific action within an activity. Steps form its standard operating procedure (SOP) and may include instructions, tools, or screenshots. | Compare the invoice total with the purchase order |

The examples follow one path through the hierarchy. Each level adds detail: open a process group to explore its processes, then a process to see its activities, and an activity to see its steps.
